How Much to Tip an Uber Driver

Rideshare tipping is one of the most debated corners of tipping culture. Here's the current standard for Uber and Lyft — and why even a couple of dollars matters more than you'd think.

Quick answer

Tip your Uber or Lyft driver 15–20% of the fare, with a $2–$5 minimum on short trips. Tip $5–$10 for airport rides with luggage, and 20%+ for premium services like Uber Black or UberXL. Every dollar of the tip goes to the driver.

Unlike a restaurant, an Uber doesn't hand you a tip line on a printed check — so it's easy to close the app and forget. But rideshare drivers absorb their own gas, insurance, and vehicle wear, and tips are a real part of their take-home pay.

The standard: 15–20% of the fare

Tip 15–20% of the ride fare, with 20% for great service. On the typical ride that's only a few dollars. For very short trips where a percentage would be tiny, use a $2–$5 flat minimum instead.

Quick reference

FareWhat to tip
Under $12 (short trip)$2 flat
$12–$20$2–$3
$20+15–20% of fare
Airport with luggage$5–$10

When to tip more

  • Airport runs where the driver loads and unloads bags
  • Premium rides — Uber Black, UberXL, Lyft Lux — warrant 20%+
  • Help with luggage, a car seat, or extra stops
  • A driver who navigated bad weather or heavy traffic smoothly

In-app or cash?

Either works. The in-app tip is convenient and goes entirely to the driver — Uber and Lyft take nothing from tips. Cash is also welcome and immediate. Unlike food delivery, rideshare drivers usually don't see the tip until after the ride, so it won't affect whether your ride is accepted.

A note on the debate

Some riders argue the platforms should simply pay drivers more. That's a fair policy view — but withholding a tip puts the cost of a structural problem onto the individual driver, who nets far less per hour than the fare suggests after expenses. If the ride was good, the tip is the direct way to recognize it.

The bottom line

15–20% of the fare, never less than $2–$5, and $5–$10 for airport trips with bags. Figure the exact amount with our tip calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Yes — current etiquette treats rideshare tipping like restaurant or salon tipping. The standard is 15–20% of the fare, with a $2–$5 minimum on short rides. Uber and Lyft take none of the tip.
Use a flat minimum. For trips under about $12, $2 is the accepted floor; $2–$3 for fares up to $20. A percentage on a tiny fare would be too small to be meaningful.
Tip $5–$10 for airport rides, especially when the driver loads and unloads your luggage — regardless of the fare amount.
Both are fine and both go entirely to the driver. In-app is convenient and trackable; cash is immediate. Unlike delivery apps, the tip doesn't affect whether your ride is accepted.
Yes. Premium services like Uber Black, UberXL, and Lyft Lux use professional drivers and pricier vehicles, so 20% or more is appropriate.
